2004 Lamborghini Murcielago

Since the introduction of the Murcielago in September 2001, there has been an increasing demand for a high performance model based on the Lamborghini flagship, therefore Audi AG, current owner of Automobili Lamborghini SpA, decided the time was right to built such an extreme car.

Developed by Automobili Lamborghini SpA, with the help of Audi Sports Division and well known German based Reiter Engineering, the Murcielago R-GT was be built to FIA and ALMS specifications.

First rumours mentioned only three cars would be built, and no customer cars would be available, but the press conference on September 9. in Frankfurt told otherwise. customer cars would be available during 2004 for a base price below 560000$, note that the Murcielago R-GT is unfortunately not street-legal.

Since its introduction, at least seven examples have been constructed, which have seen action in Europe, North America and Asia.

The R-GT is been equipped with a Lamborghini air restricted 6 litre V12 engine, developing a highly competitive power output - 600 hp. The drive train is converted from the Murciélago permanent 4WD to RWD. The total weight will be contained within the relevant class specification of 1100 kg (2420 lbs).

The Murciélago R-GT has been developed by the ‘House of the raging bull’, as a result of increasing customer demand for a high-specification Lamborghini race car at a competitive price. The R-GT is beeing supported by the Lamborghini Customer Sports Programme that takes care not only of race car sales but is also offering trackside assistance.

Full Blown Race Car

The new Murcielago R-GT offers Lamborghini clients a highly competitive car to participate in professional motorsport events on an international level.

Following the official launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Reiter Engineering will undertake a test and development programme, entering a Murciélago R-GT in the FIA GT races at Estoril, 5 October and at Monza on October 19, 2003.

Dr. Werner Mischke, Chairman and President of Automobili Lamborghini, says of the Murciélago launch, “There is already substantial demand for the Murciélago R-GT, from motorsport teams and drivers alike: we anticipate this new race car becoming one of the special attractions in GT motorsport. The presence of this new racing Lamborghini at international sports car events will be a perfect opportunity to showcase the competitive and performance advantages of the Murciélago.”

The House of the raging bull is responding with its newest race model to the rising customer demand to introduce a full blown race car at a reasonable price.

This is Lamborghini’s first step in the field of international motorsport after its engagement in Formula 1 in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The newly founded Lamborghini Customer Sports Programme takes care not only of the sale of the race cars but will also offer trackside assistance.

With the Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT clients can compete in national and international race events such as the European FIA GT Championship or the American LeMans Series in the United States.

Vehicles for customers are available since early 2004.
